QuickTake
All
DVD's should be this much fun to watch. The video and sound quality
are both excellent and would be a good way to show off your A/V
system. Another good plus for the DVD format is that we can see
that the stunt double for Drew really was naked when rolling down
the hill!
Original
MoviesForGuys theatrical review
Campy.
Mindless. Totally Entertaining. All of these can be used to describe
Charlie's Angels. This is a way over the top spoof of the 1970's
TV show. Take everything that people remember the original television
series for, exaggerate it to the point of being ridiculous, and
you've got some idea of what this movie is all about.
If
you've seen even a single episode of the TV series, then you know
the basic premise of the film version. Charles Townsend, just call
him Charlie, runs a private investigation firm. This isn't your
ordinary group of P.I.'s however. He employees three beautiful women
who he calls his Angels. Charlie is very secretive though, you never
see him, he just calls in to dish out orders. Oh yeah, and then
there's good ole bumbling Bosley, he's the token male who runs the
office and occasionally tries to help out.
For
fans of the original show, you should note that this is a whole
new group of Angels. Only Charlie and Bosley return as characters
from the TV series. Charlie's voice is once again played by John
Forsythe. Bosley is now being played by Bill Murray. The original
Angels are never referenced in any way. Instead we are introduced
to the current crew. Drew Barrymore plays Dylan, the busty redheaded
bad girl of the group. Natalie is the bubbly booty shaking blonde
played by Cameron Diaz. And finally we have Lucy Liu as the brunette
tough girl Alex who knows less about cooking than Ellie May Clampett.
The
action is so over the top that these girls are more like comic book
superheros than P.I.s. Each one of them is super intelligent, a
master of disguise and has more martial arts moves than Jet Li in
Romeo Must Die. They can also withstand
explosions which hurl them through windshields while sustaining
no more damage than messing up their hair. And although it was obviously
campy, they actually did a great job with the action sequences borrowing
alot of slow mo and wire effects not only from Romeo but also The
Matrix. Now if you hate those kind of effects in your fight
sequences, consider yourself warned.
Now
with such gorgeous babes being featured, I know every guy out there
is wondering just how much flesh we get to see. Just like the rest
of the aspects of the TV series, they simply take the "jiggle
factor" to the extreme. They just tease us alot harder. You'll
see tons of flesh and some major cleavage from Drew. And you'll
get tons of very provocative poses including some butt shots from
behind while on their all fours, but you never see any actual nudity.
Closest we get is a wet top.
This
movie does not take itself seriously even for a single moment. And
you shouldn't either. Check your brain at the door and just enjoy
the ride. There's not really a slow spot in the film, and I totally
enjoyed it. In fact, had they went ahead and gave us some nudity
I would've given it 5 stars on the Movies for Guys scale. As is,
it's a strong 4 star movie, and I highly recommend it as long as
you go into it knowing it's a campy over the top spoof. If you're
expecting a serious big screen version of the TV show, stay home.

Gun Play
Some
guns, but tons of martial arts.
Blood & Gore
Numerous
butt whippings, but they never seem to draw blood.
Car Chases
Indy
cars...they're not just for racetracks anymore.
T&A
Lots
of flesh and cleavage, but closest we get to actual nudity is
a wet top.
Chuckles
Lots
of chuckles, and I think most of them were intentional... |
