Lost World
Rated PG-13
Runtime: 2hr 7min
Starring: Jeff Goldblum, Julianne Moore, Vince Vaughn, Richard Attenborough

MFG Rating: 4/5

DVD Features

Video: The widescreen edition is anamorphic at 1.85:1 and provides an absolutely excellent picture. A 4:3 fullscreen version is also available, but why bother?

Audio: Multiple versions are available, but we reviewed the DD 5.1 version. It sounds excellent with good strong bass and excellent use of surround effects.

Extras: If you stay away from the DTS version you get a "Making of" feature, production notes, pre-production material, models, storyboards, photos, trailers, deleted scenes, etc.

DVD Quick Take

This movie is the sequel to Jurassic Park, one of the largest movies of all time. The Lost World: Jurassic Park also rolled up some alltime great box office numbers, but was considered to be a disappointment by many. The original broke so much new ground that it would've been virtually impossible for a sequel to live up to the hype and expectations that were heaped upon it.

Just like the original, there are actaully several different DVD versions of Lost World being offered:

We'll save you some research and tell you that the best buy above by far is the Jurassic Park & Lost World Collector's Edition Widescreen. It is a 2 disc set that contains the widescreen edition of both Jurassic Park and Lost World including all of the bonus material. We never recommend fullscreen editions, and this is no exception. If you do not have a widescreen set, you're still better off with letterboxing.

Many DTS enthusiasts will strongly recommend the DTS version of this movie, and we do review our movies on top of the line audio systems. We confess that we can hear the difference in DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1, but in this case there are so many extras on the non-DTS version of the DVD, that we think the very slight trade off in sound is worth it to get the bonus material.

With any of these versions what you're going to get is outstanding picture quality and a very strong sound track. The use of surround sound to put you in the action is absolutely excellent, and when a dinosaur roars the bass will bring your subwoofer to life. Unfortunately, the movie itself really fails to capture the magic of the first one. However, it is still a very good movie and worth owning, especially if you take advantage of the opportunity to buy the 2 disc set while it's available.

Bare breasts scare away kiddies and lunchbox sales!

Goldblum still gets a few good lines.
