movie review Undisputed
Rated: R
Runtime: 1hr 36min
Starring: Ving Rhames, Wesley Snipes, Peter Falk, Fisher Stevens, Ed Lover

MFG Rating: 3/5

Undisputed is an old school classic boxing movie. There's nothing fancy here. The movie sets the premise, builds all of the chacters and leads up to "the big fight". The format has worked throughout movie history with movies such as Rocky, and it still works today.

Wesley Snipes in UndisputedThe spin on this story is that it is set in prison. Wesley Snipes is Monroe Hutchen, formerly a ranked heavyweight contender. He has been in prison for 10 years taking on all comers in inter-prison boxing matchs. He's good, he's very good, and he has never been defeated.

Ving Rhames is George "Iceman" Chambers. The Iceman is the undisputed undefeated heavyweight champion of the world. However, he has run into a bit of trouble with the law and found himself sentenced to prison for rape. Does this sound familiar? Anyhow, with the undefeated champion of the world and the undefeated champion of the prison system in the same prison, you know it is only a matter of time before it's on.

Walter Hill, who has done many great "guy movies" directs this film, and he does a great job. The fight sequences are excellent, and you can practically smell the testosterone coming off the screen during the entire movie. Snipes has long since proven he can be the macho tough guy and work well in fight scenes. Rhames proves to be equally competent, and the two make very convincing fighters. And Ving definitely has the correct swagger and cool confidence to play the role of the champ.

Undisputed delivers on a classic movie formula, nothing more and nothing less. This is not a movie you'll watch over and over or any kind of breakthrough, but it's an entertaining way to spend 90 minutes. As such, we give it 3 stars. If you do not catch it on the big screen, don't miss it on DVD if for no other reason than to see Peter Falk drop the F-bomb like 20 times in 30 seconds. We never thought we'd hear such a rant come out of Columbo's mouth!
