DVD Quick Take

This is a good solid reproduction of the movie, however you aren’t going to be using this one to demo that home theater system. No real flaws or anything, but comedies do not typically make alot of use of surround sound, and that is certainly the case here. As for the movie itself, this is Adam Sandler with training wheels. He’s not quite as over the top as he is in most of his other movies. In fact, this one borders upon being a chick flick. See our theatrical review below for the complete scoop.

Movies For Guys’ Original Review of the Theatrical Release

OK guys, to sum this one up quickly, this movie will make you laugh a few times, but your date will really like it. So, go see it with someone you love (or someone you’d like to.)

Adam Sandler plays Sonny Koufax, a law school grad who won $200,000 when a cab ran over his foot. Using this money to support his desire not to join the work force, Sonny lounges around his apartment watching cartoons, sports, etc. Sonny does actually have a job working one day a week at a toll booth, but the movie really doesn’t tell you why he does this. Anyway, I was glad to see the movie take the time to explain how he pays his bills and avoids the “Friends Syndrome” where we are all left wondering how these characters with no real jobs afford lavish New York apartments.

Sonny’s girlfriend is fed up with his lack of responsibility and direction and is on her way to breaking up with him, something Sonny doesn’t want to happen. So, when 5-yr-old Julian shows up on his door Sonny decides to take temporary custody of him by pretending to be his father.

From here the story line is rather predictable, but the antics are amusing anyway (heck, why re-make the wheel when you don’t have to!) Sonny takes Julian around town, Sonny starts to like Julian and vice versa, eventually Julian is taken away and Sonny has to put on a suit to get him back. Somehow I don’t think any of this comes and any surprise and doesn’t break our rules around here about giving away too much about a movie. To see exactly what happens between all of these segments, you just need to go see the movie.

As I said in the beginning, you will get some laughs out of this movie so it won’t be a waste of your time. But if you take a date, she will end up very pleased with this flick and might just thank you for it.
