Guide to the Holiday Movies

The holiday movie season is one of our least favorites. We already have half of the local megaplex filled with dreck designed to attract mom's with SUV's full of curtain climbing yard apes who are out of school. Throw in a couple of holiday duds that the studios hope will become the next "Christmas Story", at least one sequel and a couple of truly sappy chick flicks, and you have a holiday movie season that is just as appealing as a 4 year old fruitcake and the hideous sweater that Aunt Martha knitted for you.

So let's take a look at what Hollywood is putting in our stockings this year....

Bridgette Jones: The Edge of Reason -- If we have to sit thru this film, it might drive us to the edge of insanity.

The Polar Express -- Nice animation, and we like Tom Hanks, but we can only stand so many movies packed with kids. And this one didn't make the cut.

The Incredibles -- Our review of this one is up and has caused a bit of controversy around the office. John is usually kind to Pixar films, but only gave this one 3 stars. Some of our other staff think it was a bit better than that.

Alexander -- Well, at least it makes Troy look better.

The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie -- Ok, forgive me, but I don't get SpongeBob. If you do, you'll probably see this one regardless of what I say.

Christmas with the Kranks -- Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis decide to blow off Christmas, then they decide not to. Uhm, ok.

National Treasure -- A big budget Nicolas Cage and Jerry Bruckheimer film. Probably smart move releasing this at Christmas when there aren't many other big budget action movies. If released in June, this would smack of Hudson Hawk.

Closer -- Jude Law and Julia Roberts.... Need I say more? Pardon me, I feel warm water bubbling up in the back of my throat.

Blade Trinity -- We're excited about this film. We enjoyed the first two Blade movies and the third one looks even better. We'll have a full review up about a week before it's released.

Ocean's Twelve -- The first movie was a hit because it was an ensemble piece with a wonderful cast. The gang is back for the sequel, so again our expectations are high.

Lemony Snicket's a Series of Unfortunate Events -- It looks like a Tim Burton flick, but it isn't. Jimmy Carrey stars in a quirky tale that aspires to be a family film.

Spanglish -- Adam Sandler finally turned in his gonads and apparently has decided to make full on chick flicks.

Flight of the Phoenix -- And this needed a remake why exactly? Maybe they thought they could upgrade the acting? Jimmy Stewart is a bit of a hack ya know.

Meet the Fockers -- The sequel to Meet the Parents. Her dad is again Robert De Niro, his dad is Dustin Hoffman. Sounds fun to me!

Fat Albert -- We used to love watching Fat Albert on saturday morning. Can he carry a live action movie for 90 minutes plus? We'll find out Christmas.

That's it for the movies worth mentioning that are headed to the theaters. We'll try to run down the new DVD releases for you later this week as well.

Congrats Keith!

Keith from New York was the lucky winner of the Buck Rogers DVD set! I've just cracked the shrinkwrap on our review copy so I don't know what it's like yet, but the packaging is quite nice. 5 DVD's in a book style case with a flyer showing what all the episodes are.

If you'll excuse me now, I have a date with Princess Ardala.

The "Seed" has been sewn......

I saw the latest Child's Play flick and all I can offer it is 3 out 5 stars. Not what this reviewer would consider a great time at the movies but overall it is pretty darn funny. In short if you love Charles Lee Ray and his twisted bride Tiffany you won't be disappointed. I will have the full review up soon.

Andy Griffith on DVD

November 16th is a big day for the DVD market and if classic TV is your piece of Pie then you don't want to miss the release of this classic TV tradition. You get the first full season on 4 dual sided discs that include all 32 episodes from 1960-1961 for only 27.99 if you order from Amazon.

I would like to have seen some extras but with a show like this you just watch it and relax. Andy Grffith is like an old couch; it may not look as good the new ones but once get you settled, it just feels right. If you have a son of your own I suggest you buy this set for no other reason than to share it with him like your dad did with you.

If that isn't yo thang you can check out Chronicles of Riddick or Elf instead.

Buck Rogers DVD Giveaway

You read that correctly, we're giving away one copy of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century on DVD. Deadline for entering the contest is midnight on Tuesday, November 16 so don't delay. Details are here.

Please note the deadline on replying to our email telling you that you've won, this will be strictly enforced so that we don't end up waiting over a week to announce a winner this time around.

Fear: The Edge of Reason

She wants to make me go see something called Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. I managed to escape the first one and have had several people congratulate me for doing so. Then she says we should watch the first one and then go see the second one. Aiiiiighh! Next thing you know she'll want to rent On Golden Pond or something. Or buy a soundtrack to one of them. I don't have time for these things. It's not even animated. I've got stuff to do.

Seed of Chucky

This Friday at theatres everywhere you can see 'Seed of Chucky' the 5th installment in the Child's Play series. If you loved the first couple and found the last two to be somewhat tolerable you may want to give this one a go and with Jennifer Tilly in it there is a good chance of seeing some solid T&A. And, since the staff here at moviesforguys love to see good solid T&A and Tilly has proven in the past (Bound) that she will take it off, this could be the biggest reason to see this one.

On Friday November 12th you can "Get a Load" of Chucky.

Contest Winners

Starting with our next contest (not announced yet) we're going to have to put a deadline in for people to respond to our emails letting them know they've won. This time around it took us a week to finally get a response from one of our winners. We love you Carol, but you need to check your email a little more often.

We've also gotten some returned prizes from people who gave us the wrong address to send things to. It's that a wee bit silly? You've won a free DVD, we've exchanged more than one email with these people, and they still give us the wrong address to send the prize to? Um, hello? It was FREE people. If you didn't want it, why did you enter?
