Inside Deep Throat

No, we're not going to review a porn film... Inside Deep Throat is a documentary about the X-Rated 70's film that "started a revolution" in the availability of porn movies.

I mention this movie for 2 reasons. First, it's a documentary from HBO, so it's probably pretty good and second, it's rated NC-17. Why does any of this matter? Well, mainstream media companies seem to have a fascination with porn these days, making stars out of those involved in the industry. Showtime has "Family Business", a pseudo-reality show about Seymore Butts while HBO has countered with Pornucopia and other shows that "expose" the porn industry. What they are really doing is using porn as an excuse to push the limits on what they show on their channels. I guarantee the most explicit nudity you'll see on either of these channels will be on these shows.

The NC-17 rating on this movie presents an interesting problem since many theater chains won't show films with that rating, and many newspapers and television stations will refuse ads for movies with that rating. BUT, this is from Time Warner/HBO... a company with a little bit of pull in the industry. Will a "mainstream" documentary with an NC-17 rating from major company cause some changes on how NC-17 movies are handled around the country? I certainly hope so!

Before you get your panties in a wad, a movie doesn't have to be about sex to get an NC-17 rating, it's possible to get slapped with an NC-17 rating for just talking about sex. Indeed, Clerks was given an NC-17 rating at first, as was the South Park movie. I personally would LOVE for NC-17 to become a popular rating for movies for a simple reason, it keeps the kids out! Theaters will actively prevent underage patrons from getting in to see those movies, they aren't even allowed in with their parents. Yes, you heard that right, moronic parents would no longer be allowed to bring their screaming brats into movies made for adults!

A NC-17 "Bad Santa" wouldn't have children in it... an NC-17 Blade Trinity wouldn't be crawling with 13 year olds.

I doubt it will happen soon, but I hope it will happen eventually. The day when a movie going experience would be as good as what I can get in my own home theater is something I look forward to.
