The Movie We Do Not Speak Of
This week marks the DVD release of The Movie We Do Not Speak Of. Unfortunately you wont get that joke unless you had the misfortune of sitting through this piece of crap. We are talking about the fourth movie from M. Night Shyamalan, and by far the most disappointing release of last year.
M. Night's first three releases rank among some of our favorite movies. He has proven he can write very compelling stories. And more importantly he brings his vision to film in a way that can keep people entertained and on the edge of their seat even during intricate storylines. This is nothing short of genius in today's age of short attention spans. And let us not forget his patented "surprises".
The Sixth Sense was the first movie in a long time to surprise me. I'm pretty jaded, and watch a lot of suspence films and thrillers and can usually figure out whodunnit or what's coming very early on. During my first screening, I never saw this one coming.
Then came Unbreakable. Bruce Willis was on board for this one along with Samuel L. Jackson, and somehow the MF word wasn't uttered a single time. This movie is an absolute classic for anyone who has ever read a comic book, and again I didn't see the ending coming.
2002 brought us Signs. M. Night drifted a bit more toward big box office this time teaming up with Mel Gibson and going with the SciFi appeal of exploring what crop circles might be all about. There wasn't a real came out of nowhere surprise in this movie, but it didn't need it. Signs may not have been the blockbuster everyone anticipated, but I find this movie grows on me over time.
And then came last year's new movie, the one which we do not speak of. Yeah, there's a surprise, but if by some miracle you're still awake at the end of the movie, you wont care. It's the kind of movie that will make you want 2 hours of your life back.
