Sin City
Although our review for Sin City has been up for some time, we've perhaps been a bit remiss by not talking about it more than we have. This is one of those rare truly unique movies. You see something on screen you've never seen before. In that regard it is much like The Matrix, Pulp Fiction or even Roger Rabbit. When you walk out you know you've seen not only a very original movie, but even a new approach to film making.
This is one of the first movies that is shot almost 100% in a digital universe. Other than the actors, it's all computer generated. Is that a good thing or bad thing? Film purists may be torn. But for us, it allows things like graphic novels to be brought to the big screen, and that's a good thing. Any other adapatation of something like Frank Miller's Sin City novels to live action would look as cheesy as the old Shazam/Isis Hour from the 70's.
Whether you'll like Sin City or not depends on whether you like, or would like, the novels they are based upon. It captures the feel nicely, Frank Miller saw to that by not allowing this to be made for years and year. And then he was shown the demo that becomes the first scene of the movie, and he was sold. It's as violent as anything you'll ever see, and the dialogue is cheesy, but it's supposed to be. Be warned, the people around you in the theater who are seeing the movie because they've heard it's "cool" may annoy you when they dont get it and having strange reactions to some of the things on screen. The group behind us adapted a nervous laugh to the violence. A character on screen is getting his head beaten into mush, and these guys are all laughing nervously because they've never seen anything like it and do not know what their reaction should be.
The bad part of all of this is I'm sure the Hollywood copy cats are going to throw some real dreck as us as they try to cash in and mimic Sin City. Remember some of the things that followed Roger Rabbit? Cool World...Holly would if she could! But for now, enjoy Sin City if you haven't already. If you have, go see it again.
