Thoughts on Harry Potter

This was a rare appearance for me at a kid's movie in the theater. I generally avoid them because...well, frnakly, they attract children. And parents do not make their little darlings sit quietly these days.

But we loaded up the entire crew to check out the latest Potter movie on the local IMAX screen. I shook my head as I watched hoards of kids stream in during the middle of a school day. Where's a truent officer when you need one?

It got worse when I spied the entire tard school coming in on a field trip. These guys were fascinated with the escalator and dancing to the music being put out by the video games in the lobby. Now I'm not only worried about it being quiet, but a large section of the audience just might crap on itself and then start rubbing it on each other during a two and a half hour film.

Oh, and I'll save my Regal Theaters and Fandango rant for another blog entry! Suffice to say they were far from ready for the Harry Potter crowd.

Despite all this, I was pretty pleasantly surprised with the audience. They did indeed all actually come to the movie and were mostly quiet. Either that or 12,000 watts of the IMAX theater kept the roar from the dooky fight from reaching my ears.

I'm gonna disagree with JC and his review. The film looked gorgeous, especially on that large screen. Some of the scenes were breathtaking. And I'll agree that they did a good job with the mood. However, the Goblet of Fire had a long long streak in the middle that nearly put me to sleep. Business finally picks up a bit in the final act, but this is after spending nearly two hours shifting in my seat and checking to see what time it is.

Oh, and this is not a children's movie. This is pretty dark and heavy stuff to put on a small child. I'm not sure what I would consider an appropriate age for the material, but I saw toddlers at the movie that are probably going to have nightmares.

Some of these actors are starting to look silly trying to pass themselves off for 14 year olds. We're starting to have to remind ourselves that Emma Watson is jailbait. If she returns for the next film, she's gonna be a full on hottie and of age, but playing a 15 year old. We're likely to have impure thoughts.

And then there's Harry, I was happy to see Harry come down with a case of the yellow fever in this movie. I was beginning to wonder about whether he preferred wands over witches if you know what I mean. If I had an invisibility cloak at a coed school at his age, I know what I'd be doing! I'm still not so sure about this whole riding the broomstick thing, sounds like gay slang. And dont even get me started on the whole bath tub scene. I would've scored me some ghost nookie! But no, Harry instead seems to have a thing for Ron.

I give Goblet of Fire 3 stars only because of the eye candy from some of the big scenes. But for some reason, I'm not allowed to review kid flicks.

Dont Drink And Watch

It was a slow day around the MfG water cooler today and once again a really deep subject came up amongst our staff.

What are some movies that you absolutely do not want to try to watch while drunk?

We came up with a short list of movies that are a bit of a mind scramble even while sober, and that you'd have very little chance being able to understand while under the influence. Here's our list, chime in with any others you can think of:

  • Jacob's Ladder
  • Vanilla Sky
  • 12 Monkeys
  • Memento
  • The Cell
  • The Butterfly Effect

We also thought about adding The Game and Fight Club to the list, but multiple members of the staff confessed to actually having watched each of those more than once while inebriated.
