Studios are Insane (what's new?)

It's being widely reported today that most of the major studios are now allowing their movies to be downloaded via the net for playback on your computer. The first thought that comes to mind is "it's about time!", but the second thought should be to ask what the restrictions are, and what it's gonna cost.

Well there's the gotcha. Current pricing for new releases (defined as new on DVD, not new in theaters) is between $20 and $30. You read that correctly, the studios expect you to pay up to $30 to download a movie you could buy on DVD for $16. And no, you don't get the same extras that you get on the DVD.

Also, if you're stupid enough to pay them $30 for the movie you don't get to easily copy it over to a DVD yourself and play it on your TV. Nope, these things are DRM'd up the wazoo so that you can only play them on your computer, and only on the computer you initially downloaded them to.

$30, sounds like a great deal huh?

Oh, there are some classic titles available for only $10 but not very many of them, and these are the types of titles you see in the basket at Kroger for $2.50 a pop.

Yep, the studios are still insane.
