Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid

DVD QuickTake
Quite simply one of the best movies ever made. It could be argued that this is also the original buddy movie. Paul Newman and Robert Redford are excellent together, and this is the original pairing of the two and in fact this is the role that made Redford a star.
“Most of what follows is true…” is how the movie starts out. It is roughly based on the lives of the real Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with alot of liberties taken for dramatization of course. But what we end up with is one of the best westerns ever filmed.
The DVD earned THX certification and is a wonderful remastering job including spectacular anamorphic enhancement for widescreen TV’s. The video is sharp, I only noticed a little video noise in a couple of really dark scenes. I’ve seen this DVD listed as Dolby Digital 5.1, unfortunately that is not the case, it’s 1.0 with everything right out of the center speaker. That doesn’t affect the enjoyment of the movie at all as it doesn’t really scream out for surround effects, but I would’ve at least liked to have heard the musical sequences in stereo.
Nonetheless, this one’s a keeper if you like classics, westerns or Newman and Redford.
Seen it? How many stars do you give it?
