Being a sequel starring the same main character, we knew the story, the action, and the car chases would be the same – but the big question would be… Does the story suck? Answer: Who cares!

While filling in for a friend, would-be special-forces super soldier for hire Frank Martin (Statham) decides to ‘take it easy’ and retire to Miami. Once transporter of kidnapped Asian hotties, now he is nothing more than a chauffer for the Billings family. Mr. Billings (Modine) the US Political drug Czar and his wife Audrey (Valletta) have a crappy marriage and need Martin to look after and drive their son Jack to and from school, and on occasion to the doctor. Life is boring for Frank but with this being a cool action movie it won’t stay that way long.

At the beginning you get to see what amounts to a 30 second commercial through a slow pan scroll of the Amazing 12-cylinder Audi A8, and $6,000 dollar wrist watch the Panerai – PAM 196, but things change and business picks up quick enough. Newcomer and pre-requisite school girl AnnaLynne (hot as hell) and 4 of her big flunkies try and ‘jack’ Frank’s new ride, thus making him late to pick up little Jack – Bad Idea! Frank apparently really hates to be late and this leads to kick ass fight scene number 1; There will be about 5 or 6 more before the credits roll so you get plenty of cool choreography.

Bodies lying everywhere, Frank leaves his butt whooping session to pick up Jack ‘promptly’ @ 3:00 to take him home to hotty. Mommy is waiting outside for little Jack and Frank to return but with the sight of Mom and Dad arguing Frank pulls in backwards so little Jack can’t see it… This endears Frank to mom and she decides to hang in the car window just enough, so Frank and the rest of us get a sneaky peek at the goods. Not too bad but since every chick in this movie is skinny as a rail the boobs suffer for it, which to this reviewer is BAD!

Mom is busy and asks Frank to come in on his day off to take the little guy to the doctor. All along there is a plot in place by a local bad guy to infect Frank’s little buddy with a deadly virus. The infection will spread to his meddling dad and his comrades in the war on drugs, thus killing all of them. This is a good thing for the cartels, not so good for the anti-drug movement. Frank breaks up their little deed ‘temporarily’ but ultimately winds up caught in the kidnapping and recovery, to become the hero once again. Why else would we watch?

Throw in at least 3 kick ass car and boat chases – 4 or 5 excellent fights and plenty of gun AND sword play and you get Transporter 2. Statham’s character is cool and the cars in this movie are un-friggin believable so go check it out.

Snatch is one of those movies that is so screwed up that I do not even know how to begin to describe it. And I do not necessarily mean “screwed up” in a bad way. But it’s difficult to even classify this movie. Is it a Comedy? Action? Thriller? Drama? The answer is really a little of all of the above, but we’re listing it as action as there is more action than anything else, but not by a wide margin.

Guy Ritchie, who recently married Madonna, wrote and directed this film. This is only his second major release with the other being Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. My impression of him as a writer especially is that he must be a big Tarantino fan as the best nutshell description of Snatch that I can think of is “an English version of Pulp Fiction“. As a director, he may have watched a few too many of Oliver Stone’s recent films. He uses some of those quick artistic edits which we so hated in movies like Any Given Sunday and Natural Born Killers.

The movie starts with the theft of a 86 karat diamond that is absolutely flawless. And the story revolves around the pursuit of this diamond and who is going to end up with it. We are introduced to a slew of really colorful characters and groups of characters. And as is the case with Pulp Fiction the substories of each of these characters gets intertwined as this diamond passes through, by and around their lives. Along the way we are treated to some really unusual situations, many of which end up being quite funny.

The pacing of the movie is sporadic. There are some slow spots. The cast does an excellent job though as you can tell alot of these guys really enjoyed playing these totally over the top characters. While watching the movie, and thinking through what I thought of it the star ratings floating through my head went as low as a 1 and as high as a strong 4. We finally decided on 3 stars. After all, just getting to see Brad Pitt get a mudhole stomped in his butt alone makes it worth the price of admission!

This telling of the story centers around Inspector Frederick Abberline, played by Johnny Depp. Do not expect a documentary or true story, the only thing that is definitely true here is that it is the story of several gruesome murders in the Whitechapel district of London in 1888. Abberline is an Inspector put in charge of the case. His methods are unorthodox to say the least. He’s prone to getting polluted on opium and seeing visions of the crimes.

The murder victims are prostitutes, a group of prostitutes that are friends with each other in this case. In the stereotypical movie fashion, Heather Graham plays a hooker with a heart of gold. The real star is our mysterious killer, Jack the Ripper. The murders are absolutely gruesome. He first slashes their throat wide open to prevent screams and kill them. He then cuts them up in a ritual like fashion.

If you’re looking for gore, this movie has the most I’ve seen in a while. Though in this politically correct climate we’re in, it probably still isn’t as bad as some of the classic 80’s slasher films. The psychology here is good though, they describe more than they show and give us just quick glimpses, the human brain tends to fill in the rest of the blanks with imagination. Anyone taking a small child to see this movie needs to be flogged.

The scenery matchs the mood of the movie. It’s dark and dreary. The story unfolds very well, and there are no blatent spoilers. And overall I think the Hughes Brothers did an excellent job with this film. It’s the best movie of this type I’ve seen in a long time. However, it lacks that little something magical to make it a 5 star movie, but it’s a good solid 4 stars in my book. Be warned though, this aint a feel good film, it would be a very questionable date flick.

The League of Extraordinary Gentleman is based upon a graphic novel of the same name by Alan Moore. However, the characters are based upon various other works of fiction from a variety of authors. And the movie only gets more complicated from there.

Set in 1899, a villain known only as the Phantom is terrorizing Europe with what would’ve been next generation modern weapons at the time including hand held machine guns and tanks. The world is on the brink of war as the Germans think he’s working for Britain and vice versa. A British agent, appropriately named “M”, assembles a special force to hunt down the Phantom and stop his plot.

The group he puts together are the League of Extraordinary Gentleman, even though one is a lady, but that’s far from the only logic problem with this movie, so just ignore it. The roster includes Allen Quartermain (legendary adventurer and hunter), Captain Nemo (sea faring scientist and inventor), The Invisible Man, Tom Sawyer (employed as a spy), Dorian Gray (immortal), Dr. Jekyll (and his alterego Mr. Hyde), and Mina Harker (vampire). Quartermain is the alphamale in this group, mostly because he is played by Sean Connery who definitely has the most star power of this group.

This movie starts off great, it looks like it is going to be a fun ride. However, by the time we get the entire LXG put together, the story is already starting to get convoluted. There are many unexplained and ultimately unnecessary twists and turns. It really tries too hard and instead of being fast paced it becomes messy and disjointed. Drop off your sense of disbelief at the door. And if your big fans of any of these characters from other works, be aware that in this story they’ve gained quite a few characteristics the original authors didn’t include.

As convoluted as LXG gets from time to time, it’s still a fun ride. We give it 3 stars. There are some really good visuals. The action is almost too fast paced, when they cut between multiple fights it becomes a bit of a pain to follow, but at least there’s lots of it! And the concept is original even if the characters are not. Overall, this isn’t a bad way to spend a couple of hours.
