Last night, Wednesday September 1st, the Plaza Theater in Atlanta had a sneak preview screening of Machete, the Robert Rodriguez film that started as a fake trailer in Grindhouse and became a real film, starring Danny Trejo as, well, a tough hombre with a machete. Before the movie there was a Mariachi Band, babes from Blast Off Burlesque, some Atlanta Rollergirls, and characters from The Silver Scream Spook Show.

SPOILERific Thoughts on PREDATORS

Now that Predators has been in theaters for two weeks…

Warning, here be spoilers. Although I try to keep a few things mysterious. Still, avert your eyes if you wish to remain pure and untainted and unspoiled.

No kidding. Really. Spoilers. SPOILERS. Like that sign says in the dark forest on the way to the Wicked Witch’s castle in The Wizard of Oz, [I'D TURN BACK IF I WERE YOU!]!

I enjoyed Predators quite a bit (here’s the MFG review), but, it’s still fun to nitpick at the details, if only because our glimpses of Predator society are so brief and enigmatic that they invite speculation.

* I have to wonder about the Predator selection process, for finding these Earthlings that make particularly good prey. Particularly in one instance, which I can’t discuss without too many spoilers. Seems like some Predator must spend a lot of time in treetops on battlefields (and in more urban environments) invisible to pick out the prey with the potential to be asskickers. Are our Predator-hunters the ones who abducted them, or are there other Predators running this as a business, like, they offer Wild Safari Weekend for Accountant Predators? Which, if so, might explain why, ultimately, this batch of Predators really isn’t quite as good at hunting as they might think they are.

* Throwing your prey out of the spaceship from a great height over a jungle is great fun, but is it really cost-effective? Like the one who died on impact when his PredaChute (TM) didn’t open. Some Predator who spent all that time invisible spying on the Russian Mafia to get their enforcer (or whatever) must feel, well, that was time wasted. Similarly, although in this instance our protagonists came out relatively unscathed from their encounter with the alien-hunting-dogs, I can picture other expeditions that, despite the rough tough human killers, they were reduced in seconds to kibbles and bits. I picture the Predators dejectedly sitting around their campfire when that happens, moaning, “That was the worst hunt ever! The dogs killed everybody, I didn’t get to use my zap gun or any of these fancy springing-spinning blades! I wonder if I can take all this stuff back to Galactic Bass Pro Shop!”

* What were those things in the boxes? We see the one dead one…which looks a tiny bit like a Giger alien, but not enough for it to really be one. Are they other sentient aliens, abducted from their own planet the way the humans were, or are these just animals, for example, just Predator Homeworld Grizzly-bears? Is the purpose of releasing them to make it more interesting for the Predators, something else for them to shoot at in the bushes, or to give the humans more to worry about? And again, if the latter, what if those monsters succeed in making mincemeat out of the humans, it means a pretty sucky hunt for the Predators.

* I understand the closing shot, with even more boxes parachuting in (I’d have to view it freeze-framed on DVD to see if there are also more humans being dropped in), to end on a dramatic note, but it seems a little too soon….. like this jungle is Grand Central Station for Predator hunts. I mean, if Morpheus has been hanging out in the abandoned mining ship undetected, visitors (human, Predator, and otherwise) can’t be all THAT frequent.

Or is the Predator Game-Warden just being a dick; noticing that the humans wiped out that batch of Predators, and so sending in some more alien-grizzly-bears to finish ‘em off?

* The depiction of two Predator clans that are enemies, or whatever, is interesting. But again, assuming this is, sort of a weekend warrior hunt, why did they pick that weekend to both hunt humans and clash with this other rival group of Predators? Was it like golfers finding that the foursome playing the hole ahead of theirs is really slow and so holding them up? Were they rival fraternities in college? I mean, they’ve skinned at least one of ‘em, and are torturing the other. Was it just because this group of Predators had paid to be hunting on this 100-square mile patch of hunting preserve, and these other guys showed up, drinking beer and hollering?

For the record, there’s a 4-part prequel to the film from Dark Horse comics:
June 9, June 16, June 23, June 30.

Also, a sequel comic book to the film, apparently a one-shot. July 14.

And this coming July 27, apparently a graphic novel adaptation of the film for $6.99.

Then November 16, for $13.59, what looks like a collection of all of the above, the 4-issue prequel, the film adaptation, and the one-shot sequel.

There doesn’t seem to be a novelization of the film. I guess Alan Dean Foster was taking the summer off.

The Other Guys – Vote on Facebook for 2nd premiere city

The Other Guys will have a 2nd city premiere on August 5th. You can vote on Facebook to make it in your city. If you happen to live in one of those 20 cities, that is:

Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Kansas City, Miami, Minneapolis, Nashville, New Orleans, Orlando, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Seattle, Tampa/St. Petersburg, and Washington, DC.

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg will announce the winning city on August 2nd, and will attend the screening in the winning city on August 5th.

The movie has its New York City premiere August 2nd, then this 2nd city premiere August 5th, and it opens in wide release on August 6th.

Traci Lords, Princess of Mars

The Asylum is a film studio that makes “mockbusters”, straight-to-DVD releases that often just happen to be of a similar title and general theme of a movie coming almost immediately to a theater near you. For example, The Day The Earth Stopped, timed with the release of the remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still, or their 2005 War of the Worlds that came out right before the Spielberg/Tom Cruise one.

Pixar has a adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel A Princess of Mars (from the John Carter of Mars series) in the works, but that’s years away. However, James Cameron has mentioned that A Princess of Mars served as some of the inspiration for Avatar. The book is in the public domain, so, voila, here’s an adaptation starring Traci Lords!

It comes out on DVD on December 29th. The trailer for it is available here on YouTube.

Monty Python Food Drive Atlanta 10/18

ICE AGE 3-D Father’s Day sneak preview

Opening August 14th, Spread is an Ashton Kutcher comedy about a sexual grifter in Los Angeles who romances beautiful. rich, older women (such as Anne Heche) to support him in the lifestyle to which he’s become accustomed.

Complications ensue when he falls for a waitress his own age (Margarita Levieva). As it turns out, she’s a sexual grifter as well.

LOOK on DVD; interview with director

Look comes out on DVD today. It’s a narrative filmed as if from the point of view of surveillance cameras. A bunch of interlocking stories (ala Crash, etc.), it follows characters as they’re observed on camera in malls, parking lots, schools, traffic cams, elevators, the office, and so on.

DVD extras: Alternate ending, deleted scenes, outtakes, TV spots, documentary “A LOOK Behind the Scenes”, audio commentary with writer/director Adam Rikfin, producers Brad Wyman and Barry Schuler, and actor Hayes MacArthur.

Giant people movies

Monsters vs. Aliens spoofs a lot of 1950s monsters and alien invasion movies, but the main character Ginormica is a nod to Attack of the 50 Foot Woman.

I was thinking about all the movies where someone grows to enormous size. For the purposes of this list, I’m limiting it to the 20th-century person gets radiation / zapped by an alien / eats food with a weird chemical in it / etc. genre. No Norse giants or denizens from Gulliver’s Travels need apply!

THE CYCLOPS (1957). Test pilot crashes in Mexico and grows to enormous size due to radioactivity.
THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN (1957). Was done on MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000.
ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN (1958). I’ve never seen it, but several people have told me that, alas, the movie does not live up to the fantastic poster.

WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST (1958, AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN sequel, although it has the actor Duncan Parkin from THE CYCLOPS rather than Glenn Langan from AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN. Was done on MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000.
THE 30 FOOT BRIDE OF CANDY ROCK (1959). Lou Costello’s last movie, and the only one he made without Bud Abbott.
VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS (1965). Was done on MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000.
HONEY, I BLEW UP THE KID (1992)
ATTACK OF THE 50 FT. WOMAN (1993 remake)
ATTACK OF THE 60 FOOT CENTERFOLD (1995).

Also, I remember various VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA episodes where somebody would get Real Big and wrestle the 7-foot model of the Seaview in a swimming pool or something. And I’ve never seen that other Irwin Allen show LAND OF THE GIANTS, but, judging from the lunchboxes I remember other kids having, there must have been giants aplenty.

AMC Best Picture Showcase 2009

Car Wars

Seeing DEATH RACE (Reviewed here on MFG) made me think about the car combat genre.

Those movies, usually but not always set in some post-apocalyptic future, where road rage has been made formal with automobiles equipped with weapons, or used as weapons.

The original DEATH RACE 2000 (Amazon) with David Carradine, of course.

MAD MAX (Amazon), THE ROAD WARRIOR (Amazon), and MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME (Amazon), obviously.

TANK GIRL (Amazon).

The recent DOOMSDAY (Reviewed here on MFG), directed by Neil Marshall, with Rhona Mitra as a sort of Mad Maxine.

Stephen Spielberg’s DUEL (Amazon).

Supernatural killer cars:
CHRISTINE (Amazon), THE CAR (Amazon), KILLDOZER (sadly, not on DVD).

The various James Bond cars, and Batman’s batmobiles.

Honorable mention:
The Mega-RV in STRIPES (Amazon), the Landmaster in DAMNATION ALLEY (Not on DVD).

There’s apparently a couple dozen Italian ROAD WARRIOR ripoffs, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen any, with the exception of WARRIOR OF THE LOST WORLD (Amazon) that was done on MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 (It has a garbage truck with a lot of scrap metal welded onto it).

That I think is the clincher, you can have a post-apocalyptic movie, but unless you have some credible car stunts, you can’t really be given the status of “Road Warrior” ripoff. Punks dressed in leather do not a Road Warrior ripoff make, doubly so if they’ve got a VW with some styrofoam sections painted silver glued onto it.

Paradise by the dashboard light

In the late 1950s and early 1960s there were nearly 4000 Drive-In theaters in America; today only a handful per state are left.

Earlier this week here in Atlanta there was a screening for the new movie HELL RIDE, Larry Bishop’s homage to 1960s motorcycle movies (Produced by Quentin Tarantino, and in effect a third movie to go with GRINDHOUSE’s DEATHPROOF and PLANET TERROR).

HELL RIDE is a Drive-In theater movie if there ever was one, and to give it a sense of occasion, there was a promotional event, HELL RIDE REBELLION, at the Starlight Six Drive-In.

Before the movie started at 9:30 PM, they had two bands play from 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM, and a burlesque show with two tattooed biker chicks and a ’50s greaser. All this MC’ed by Saspirilla the Blue Gorilla. That is, somebody in a blue gorilla suit.

Atlanta motorcycle clubs had a lot of motorcycles out in force, and there were also a few vintage cars there (They do a thing on Labor Day weekend at the Starlight Six Drive-In, Drive-Invasion, where they encourage people to bring their 1950s/60s/70s cars and show Drive-In movies from those decades).

After HELL RIDE, they showed HELLBOY II, and then WANTED, so it was an evening that wound down around 2:50 AM or so.

Drive-In Theaters of course came into their own in the 1950s, when Post-World War II baby-boomers decided, if it was worth going to a movie, it was worth going to a movie in your big old car.

It was a social event. You could get out and walk around and check out other boss cars. You could make out with your date, which is why Drive-Ins became known as “Passion Pits.” You could walk to the snack bar and bring back provisions to get you through the next movie.

Drive-Ins continued through the 1960s, but by the 1970s, television and Daylight Savings Time had taken their toll, and by the 1980sÂ home videotapes and cable TV encouraged people to stay home. Plus, Drive-In theaters took up valuable real estate, andÂ many of them were torn down.

Some still exist though. There’s this webpage, www.driveintheater.com , that lists remaining Drive-In theaters by state. I don’t know how up-to-date it is, but, for example, it lists only 4 Drive-In theaters in Georgia, but some 41 in Ohio. Here’s another list in wikipedia. Check your state and see if there’s still an operating Drive-In theater near you!

Biker flicks

HELL RIDE, Larry Bishop’s homage to 1960s biker movies, is released this weekend (Produced by Quentin Tarantino, and in effect another GRINDHOUSE movie).

It made me curious which of those 1960s biker movies are available on DVD. This isn’t a definitive list, but it’s got a lot of the highlights.

American International Pictures was ground zero for biker movies:

THE WILD ANGELS (1966), directed by Roger Corman, with Peter Fonda, Nancy Sinatra, and Bruce Dern (Amazon).

DEVIL’S ANGELS (1967), With John Cassavetes. Apparently not on DVD (IMDB).

THE BORN LOSERS (1967), Directed by Tom Laughlin. The first Billy Jack movie (Amazon).

THE GLORY STOMPERS (1968). With Dennis Hopper and Casey Kasem! Apparently not on DVD (IMDB).

THE MINI-SKIRT MOB (1968). Women bikers. With Sherry Jackson (who was a sexy android on the original STAR TREK), and Harry Dean Stanton (Amazon).

ANGELS FROM HELL (1968). Apparently not on DVD (IMDB).

THE SAVAGE SEVEN (1968), with Larry Bishop. Penny Marshall’s film debut. Apparently not on DVD (IMDB).

HELL’S ANGELS ‘69 (1969). Some of the cast are real Hell’s Angels (Amazon).

ANGELS UNCHAINED (1970), with Larry Bishop, and Tyne Daly (Amazon).

CHROME AND HOT LEATHER (1971) with Larry Bishop, Erik Estrada, Marvin Gaye (in one of only two acting roles), and Cheryl Ladd’s first film (Amazon).

KNIGHTRIDERS (1981). Strange George Romero film where a traveling carnival of motorcycle-jousters (Think Medieval Times restaurant with bikers) does a King Arthur and the Knights of Camelot themed-show and start to emulate the characters they play (Amazon).

Of course, there’s the post-apocalyptic biker gangs of MAD MAX and THE ROAD WARRIOR.

And, as for comedic motorcycle gangs, there was the bumbling “Ratz and Mice” motorcycle gang, led by Eric Von Zipper, which tried to hassle Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello in the Beach Party movies. And the inept “Black Widows” biker gang, led by Cholla, in the Clint Eastwood orangutan movies (EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE and ANY WHICH WAY YOU CAN).

New DVD releases, Tuesday July 29th

Free Movie Monday 2/4/08

Classic Wednesday Continues

This weeks selection is Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Of the ten Trek movies, Khan is at the top of my list without question. Several of the others were quite good, but none match the fun factor of Khan.

FYI, we don’t particularly follow our “no spoilers” rule on these classic movie reviews, as you’ve had many many many years to see them. Though we aren’t doing a play by play either. And if you didn’t know Spock died at the end of Khan, you don’t care that Spock died at the end of Khan.

Free Movie Monday for 1/28/08

James Bond â€œQuantum of Solaceâ€

Bond 22 has a real name, Quantum of Solace. Mmmmâ€¦ yeah.

Locations for the new flick have been released as well with filming in Austria, Italy and South America (I guess the person who wrote up the release things South America is just one countryâ€¦)

In an interesting move, this movie follows directly on to the story of Casino Royale with Bond looking for the truth about Vesper, the one night stand he had that didnâ€™t end up so well for the girl. This is a revenge tale, which goes well with the new â€œedgierâ€ Bond franchise.

No word yet on if Q will return, but weâ€™re keeping our fingers crossed. I donâ€™t care how edgy Bond gets, he still needs his gadgets!

Quantum of Solace opens on November 7, 2008.

Yes, I used the “P” word.Â From the mysteriously tantalizing trailers to the obsessive pursuit of all the viral marketing material to the LOUD $41 million dollar noise made at the box office this past weekend, Cloverfield is now, officially, a phenomenon.

And you just KNOW the folks at Paramount are giddy about how well it’s doing especially considering the budget for the movie is estimated to have been only $25-30 million.Â JJ is already thinking about what comes next and I’m sure the studio will want to get an official multi-sequel deal in place very soon. Â For all you scavenger-surfing viralists, get ready for more online adventures with Tagruato and Slusho (and probably more MySpace pages).

Free Movie Monday for 1/28/08

It’s a holiday for some folks, but not for us. Here the Free Movie Monday express just keeps on truckin!

New in the prize library this week is Fatal Contact, a good martial arts movie with a decent story but a crappy ending. Don’t let the ending waive you off though, you aren’t watching it for the story after all.

Several new titles have been added to the prize library, including a couple of brand new releases, White Noise 2 and The Ten.

The rules remain the same, but if the last couple of weeks is any indication then competition for this weekly giveaway is increasing. So, first to post saying what they want gets it (rules on the library page)!

Whelp, it’s been 9 years

I can’t remember what exact review did it, but back in 1998 we read something that Ebert wrote and got pissed off. It wasn’t his opinion that was so bad (though I recall it did suck) but in his review he gave away key plot elements.. nothing annoys us more than a reviewer giving away spoilers.

After an evening of ranting about it we came up with the idea to do our own site, one that would cater to things we liked and one that would never ever spoil a movie for someone. Thus, MoviesForGuys was born.

Have you been around since the beginning? Do you remember the original look? Ahh.. the good old days, when .shtml was cutting edge for the web. Lookie! An include!

The site has gone through a few revisions since then but our goal has never changed, to provide you with (somewhat) timely reviews that tell you what you need to know without spoiling anything for you.

I just wanted to take a moment to say thanks to all of you, our readers, without who this site would be kinda pointless.

So Happy New Year, and get ready for a few more changes as we celebrate our 10th year. More reviews, more giveaways, more crap to crash the server!
