American Pie
Rated Unrated
Runtime: 1 hr 35min
Starring: Jason Biggs, Shannon Elizabeth, Chris Klein, Eugene Levy

MFG Rating: 4/5

DVD Features

Video: Video quality on this DVD is average. There's no obvious video noise or anything, but nothing special either. Colors are sharp, but the picture seems a bit dark at times. This is wide screen enhanced, but also has an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 so you get a pretty large picture even on a non-widescreen set.

Audio: Nothing special here. Dolby Digital 5.1 is available, but like alot of comedies it doesn't really hit the rear speakers at all.

Extras: Many extras on this DVD including some previously unseen footage that had to be removed to achieve an R-rating at the theatre. This version is unrated. Other features include commentary by half the world including director, writer, producer and the actors who portrayed the main characters. You also get trailers, outtakes, Spotlight On Location, Music highlights, production notes, quotes, and more.

DVD Quick Take

This is a great "coming of age" high school comedy with a disctinly 90's flavor using such things as the internet for part of the humor. The audio and video quality on the DVD are just average, but what makes this one a keeper is the fact that you can get the unrated version and see the movie as it was originally intended.

The MPAA, which controls movie ratings, has this screwed up methodology where you can kill as many people as you like, blow up things, destroy property and be as violent and gross as you want and that's ok. However, if you go very far at all with sex and nudity they'll slap an NC-17 rating on it which is the equivalent of a death sentence at the box office. American Pie had to be tamed down multiple times to achieve an R-rating instead of NC-17. However, the parts they cut out are back, and that makes this DVD worth seeing. The scenes most effected are the scene with the pie and the girl masturbating on the bed. When you see it, you'll see just how anal retentive the MPAA is. But I digress, get the DVD and see the movie as it was originally intended to be.

Movies For Guys' Original Review of the Theatrical Release

Thanks to movies like this one and last year's "There's Something About Mary" the American sex comedy is definitely alive and well. This movie features the tried and true premise of 4 high school boys who are totally obsessed with the idea of losing their virginity. This is definitely a 90's spin on that theme however. Not only does it feature some wonderfully clever uses of the Internet, but overall it has a bit more modern style and spin than any of the dozen or so mid-80's movies on the same theme that came out after the classic "Porky's". You wont be embarassed to admit that you saw this movie.

Every character you knew in high school is stereotyped beautifully in this movie from the jocks to the band buddies to the nerds. Everyone will have at least a couple of characters in this movie that reminds them of someone they knew in high school. And I'm sure some of the things that some of these characters go through will look strangely familiar to lots of the guys in the audience. Come on admit it, there's not a one of you who hasn't tried to watch an adult movie between the squiggles on a scrambled cable channel.

You've never heard of anyone in this movie with the exception of Eugene Levy who steals a couple of scenes as the father of one of the characters who keeps getting caught spanking the monkey. However, the ensemble works pretty well, and other than the cast you wont pay attention to just how low budget this movie is.

A sex comedy is about the laughs more than anything else. And this movie delivers in abundance. Lots of classic sex, bodily function and bathroom humor here. I've always said that few things are funnier than a well timed and executed bit of flatulence. This movie along with "Mary" have proven that there's also few things funnier than some well placed ejaculate. That along with the apple pie trailer that no doubt most of you have seen by now should give you an idea of just how crude this movie can get. And for that reason, I'm calling this one a true comedy classic. Go see it.

Second Takes

This is a guy movie no doubt but taking your partner shouldn't be a problem at all. Be ready for a fast mental transport back to high school to remember what it was like to be horny kid. The lines are great in this movie and I couldn't help but bust out laughing many times. Although I have never used an apple pie as an uhhhmm, orifice, it gave me ideas! I would see this movie twice without hesitation. -- Biff

Really really funny movie, but not quite as good as There's Something About Mary. It's a shame that everyone has to compare this movie to Mary, but it is so obviously inspired by Mary that it's hard not to. There are quite a few original comedy bits in this one, an a new word to add to your voculabary, MILF! -- John
