Rat
Race is yet another attempt this summer at the good old fashioned
American mindless slap stick comedy. Ever since the Farrelly Brothers
scored big a few years back with There's
Something About Mary and Dumb & Dumber, the studios have
been more willing to take a chance on these type of comedies. Some
are good, but we've also been subjected to some movies that are
almost embarassing to watch as a result. However, Rat Race is from
Jerry Zucker of Naked Gun and Airplane
fame, so we went into this one with an open mind despite the trailers
looking somewhat lame.
The
premise of this movie is at least somewhat original. A Vegas casino
owner, played by John Cleese, selects a group of people from different
walks of life to have a race. The race is simple, they have to get
to a train station locker in Silver City, NM. First one to get there
and unlock gets the two million dollars inside. That's it, no other
rules, anything goes.
Our
group of racers includes Rowan Atkinson playing a narcoleptic foreigner.
We also have a mother, played by Whoopi, who has just been reunited
with her daughter she gave up for adoption. Cuba Gooding Jr., who
must've lost a bet, is also in the cast playing a NFL referee who
just blew one of the largest calls in football history and hated
by all gamblers. Breckin Meyer is the straight and narrow uptight
guy. The bumbling scam artist brothers are played by Seth Green
and Vince Vieluf. And last, but certainly not least is Jon Lovitz
who is on vacation with his family.
Our
racers of course run into tons of obstacles along the way and tons
of additional stars in various roles along the road to New Mexico.
Kathy Bates, Dean Cain, Wayne Knight, Dave Thomas and Paul Rodriguez
are among some of the other stars in the film. Unfortunately even
with all of this star power, and a Zucker at the helm, the movie
still drags at points as many of the gags fall flat.
There
are some really classic funny bits in this movie, but it can wait
for DVD. We're giving it 2 stars as there's a bit too many slow
spots where the laughs just aren't there to make us recommend this
one as a movie that has to be seen on the big screen.
