DVD Quick Take

The one word that continually comes to mind for me here is “lame”. The movie itself is a very mediocre effort. See our theatrical review below for our full take on the flick itself. And unfortunately the DVD is an equally mediocre effort.

The video quality was ok, but the audio really missed the mark. For a movie with alot of ocean and underwater shots, Dolby Digital provides the means to really make the viewer feel they’re in the environment. Add to that the fact that this is a bit of an action flick and I would’ve expected my speakers to really have a good time with this movie. Instead it was annoyingly quiet. The one good thing I can say about the DVD is that it included a ton of extras, unfortunately they’re all related to this movie.

Movies For Guys’ Original Review of the Theatrical Release

Sharks! Really big Mako sharks in fact… 45 feet long! The sharks are the stars of this movie, both in animatronic and CGI form.

Aquatica is a research lab located at sea currently doing research to aid in the re-activation of dormant human brain cells like those found in Alzheimer’s patients. It seems that sharks do not lose any brain activity as they age, leading the scientist to think the proteins found in the sharks brains may lead to a cure for Alzheimer’s.

All of this is being funded by a group of investors headed by Russell Franklin (Samuel L. Jackson) who are getting impatient with the pace of the research. It doesn’t help that a shark got loose and almost ate a few teens on a pleasure romp either.

In an effort to save her project Dr. McAlester (Saffron Burrows) skips a few steps in the research project to create the larger makos, and ends up with smarter, more vicious sharks as a result. After an accident in the lab starts a chain of events that starts the entire facility sinking, it becomes a chomp fest for the sharks as they hunt down each survivor one by one.

The movie suffers from a lack of involvement with the characters, we just don’t really care who is going to make it out alive and as a result the audience just sits there and watches the special effects. Heck, Dudley (LL Cool J) is the only character that’s really worth paying attention too! One thing about the cast that does work however is that it consists mainly of unknown actors, so we just aren’t sure who will make it and who won’t.

It’s worthwhile to point out again that these sharks look really good, and if you’d just like to see some good shark attack scenes this movie is worth checking out. I do suggest you at least try to see a matinee though to save a few bucks.
