“Four teenagers attempt to scam there way across country and into a KISS concert.” Doesn’t sound like much inspiration for a movie, does it? Guess what? It isn’t!
When you’re a rock’n'roll fan during the golden age of disco, the whole world is against you. This group of guys has decided, however, that they just aren’t going to take it any more! Ever wonder what you would get if you took the characters from “Bill ‘n Ted’s Excellent Adventure”, mixed them with the ones from “Dumb & Dumber” and sent them all back to 1978? This movie tries to do just that and, despite a few inevitable laughs, it just doesn’t measure up.
The plot is thin, the screenplay is lame, and the characters while I can identify with them in some cases, are not exactly memorable. I do have to give credit to the actors themselves, however. Here they are able to make the best of what they’ve got and I can’t fault the performances at all.
Oh, and where’s KISS? One of the ad’s I heard said, “…starring Gene Simmons.” but neither he nor any of the other band members appeared until the VERY end of the movie and, even then, it was only in concert. And if you cringe every time you see or hear Jeremiah/Jam’s mother and can’t figure out why, it’s because she was the landlady from Kingpin (I still have nightmares).
The music is quite good, especially for us 30-something guys and the movie does have a warmhearted feel to it. Those things plus the fact that I did find myself identifying with the main characters almost makes me want to give this movie 3 stars, but I just can’t.
It’s worth a rental or, better yet, catch it when it makes it to TV (which won’t be long).
Seen it? How many stars do you give it?
