Have you ever had a day where nothing you do seems to make sense? Where you imagine you are someone else and you are watching your life as though it were a really bad’ 50’s movie? No? Well, you might not but Martin Tupper (Brian Benben) does, and that was the hook (I hate Hollywood speak) of this 90’s sex comedy that first debuted on HBO (later in reruns on Fox with a F’N laugh track, WTF?) in 1990. Brought to life by now legendary sitcom creators Kaufmann and Crane and directed by John Landis (Werewolf in London ruled) the show was destined to succeed and it did for almost 7 years. Until HBO turned stupid… Just watch I crapped on your enthusiasm and you’ll know what I mean. Dumb arses arghhh!!!

The main character Martin Tupper is a recently divorced editor with a 10 year old son that lives in NYC. His ex-wife Judith (Wendy Malick) is married to a successful doctor/philanthropist that you never get to see, every time his name is mentioned the people on screen swoon and praise him so, of course Martin hates him. His secretary Toby (Denny Dillon) is the biggest pain in hanky you’ve ever seen and as far as I was concerned, nothing more than a little round bowling ball shaped Bitc… I mean a stupid character that added very little to the show. And, his best Friend Eddy Charles (Jeffrey Joseph/Dorien Wilson) is a local TV host that gets more tail than he can handle so he throws M art in some of his leftovers, and that is the basic premise of the show. Martin is single and dates/beds a different hot chick each week on the show and due to some really creative editing we not only get to see the T&A we also get to see Martin’s thoughts in the form of old black and white movie and TV clips. Kind of a word bubble thing in comics but without the words and funnier.

Many shows from that period had some of today’s biggest stars in them in cameo and extra roles but Dream On always seemed to me to have a little bit more than the others. The list is pretty awesome in the chick department and most (not all) get nekkid in the process. Mimi Rogers, Jennifer Tilly, Elizabeth Shue, Sean Young, and a smoking hot younger Courtney Cox and many, many more. There were also a bunch of guys who cares? Nobody because they don’t add much Except, Michael McKean. He gets added to the show in the second season as Martin’s boss Gibby and he made the show. Practically every word out of his mouth was crude and demeaning I loved it. He was somewhat of an idol when I was younger and I still fall back on some of his better insults when the mood and timing suits me. Ah, memories.

If you had HBO back in the day you undoubtedly would have seen a preview at the very least if you weren’t already glued to the TV watching this ground breaking show (more Hollywood speak, why am I using it. I hate it) but, thanks to DVD and moviesforguys.com you can see it for the first time if you missed it or you can relive the laughter all over again if you have forgotten how funny it was. Come on, 1990 was a long friggin’ time ago so head over to Amazon and buy it. You’ll laugh til you spit beer out your oversized noses. Trust in JC. He is always right.

Seen it? How many stars do you give it?
