Gone In 60 Seconds

If you are one of the few people who have seen the original Gone in 60 Seconds (1974) and are expecting a remake, forget it. The only thing this movie shares with it’s namesake is the name, Eleanor and the fact that it is based on car thieves. It’s a totally different story and actually has a plot instead of just one long chase sequence.

Nicolas Cage plays Memphis Rains, the best car thief in the business, but he’s retired. However, he gets pulled back in and finds himself with the task of stealing 50 big ticket exotic cars in one night.

If you go into this movie expecting nothing but chase sequences, you’ll be disappointed. We do get one chase sequence, and it is one of the best chase sequences you’ll ever see. I defy any redblooded heterosexual American male not to get some goose pimples when Eleanor finally has her engine started and does her first burnout away from the cops.

Forget the fact that this movie has 3 recent Oscar winners starring in it, plus one of my alltime favorite actors in Robert Duvall. I’m not even going to talk about their performances, they cant compete. The scene stealer here is a Shelby Mustang GT 500 named Eleanor. Had she been on screen more, this movie may have very well rated 5 stars. As it is she pulls a typical 3 star action movie up to 4 stars.

I honestly think Bruckheimer missed the mark slightly with this one. This is a movie that actually needed less plot, less story and character development and more Eleanor. However, as is, I enjoyed myself at this movie and it really does need to be seen on the big screen. Just try to control yourself on the drive home as you’ll find you have this strange urge to drive 100 mph.
