If
you're a fan of Utopia or Todd Rundgren you might like having this
DVD around. If you don't care for Utopia then stay far far away
from it by all means. If you aren't familiar with Utopia go find
some to listen to first.
This
is a time capsule of Utopia from 1977 to 1984 when they were more
mainstream pop-rock type of band. I guess it's good to keep in mind
that a lot of what's on this disc was produced before there really
was such a thing as a "music video". The performances on this disc
range from live footage to studio videos with a few combinations
of the two. Some of the early recordings are slightly above home-video
quality, while some of the ones toward the end are done really well.
The coolest is the one for "Emergency Splashdown" where the band
looks like a cross between Devo and and the crew from Buck Rogers.
Lots of cool flashing lights and strange effects and sounds abound.
There's also a pretty neat Beatles spoof called "I Just Want To
Touch You" that looks like it could have made it to MTV, but I doubt
it ever did.
The
sound quality on this disc ranges from really bad to tolerable,
however that's to be expected from a lot of material of this timeframe.
It's simply not as polished as Todd Rundgren's solo material.
Sometimes
the roots of a plant aren't always as interesting as the plant itself.

not
even any good "girls in the crowd" shots.
