Nurse Betty

I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting when I went into this movie. Chris Rock is one of the stars, and its billed as a comedy, so I guess I was expecting to laugh. Morgan Freeman is in it, so I guess I was expecting some serious stuff. Renee Zellweger is cute as hell, so I figured some romantic angles had to be in there.

Did these ideas all come about during the movie? Well, yes, but I don’t think it was funny enough to be a comedy, it wasn’t really a romantic movie either so I guess overall I’d consider it to be a drama. A drama with some very dark humor in it. And that’s not a bad thing. The movie is very well written and acted, and I really did like it, but I just can’t get myself to award more than 3 stars.

Renee is Betty, an innocent housewife from Kansas who after seeing something she shouldn’t have loses her sense of reality for awhile and heads to California in search of a doctor from her favorite soap opera (Greg Kinnear.) Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock are a pair of paid hit men who are after the car Betty is in, or rather, the drugs that are in the trunk.

This is anything but a normal movie. If you are expecting a fast-paced, shoot’em up flick just don’t bother. If on the other hand you’ve got a hankering for a well written story that borders on an artsy-fartsy flick, this Nurse Betty is your hookup.

Seen it? How many stars do you give it?
