Vikings vs. an alien! In 709 AD, a spaceship crashes on Earth. The extra-terrestrial (but apparently human) Kainan (James Caviezel, Jesus in The Passion of the Christ) enlists the aid of some nearby Vikings to hunt down an alien monster that has hitched a ride on his ship and is now loose in the countryside.

Along the way, he meets warrior-babe Freya (Sophia Myles), and other Vikings (Jack Huston, John Hurt, Ron Perlman).
Seemingly the idea here is that humans are from elsewhere than Earth, and Earth was colonized so long ago that we Earthlings forgot we were from another planet. Skip forward a few thousand years, and it’s Viking Times! A spacecraft crashs, an alien monster gets loose, and a warrior (who’s lost his ray-gun) has to hunt down the monster. Got all that?
This is basically The 13th Warrior meets Predator. Presumably the idea here is this is the event that inspires the epic poem Beowulf, but the movie doesn’t hit you over the head with it. It’s a B-movie with A-movie production values, and it’s fun.
And the Viking village and costumes are meticulously recreated. We also see some flashbacks from Kainan’s homeworld. It may be that the monster is just misunderstood; however, he’s still trying to eat Vikings, and Vikings Just Don’t Go For That Kind Of A Thing.

Here’s a trailer for Outlander on YouTube.
And it opens today in limited release in the United States. Here’s a list of theaters where it’s playing.
So, this started me thinking about Viking movies that have been released since, oh, the 1980s.
ERIC THE VIKING.
THE 13th WARRIOR
BEOWULF (the recent CGI one)
PATHFINDER
Any others I’m forgetting?
OUTLANDER falls into that subgenre of Viking movies, that explore the root story behind BEOWULF (as does THE 13TH WARRIOR, based on the Michael Crichton novel EATERS OF THE DEAD, where the monsters are an unextinct tribe of Neanderthals).
I remember Dark Horse comics did a Vikings vs. Alien one-shot comic book (I mean, the Ripley/Sigourney Weaver Alien).
I’m agreeing with the 4 out of 5 stars here. I would have liked to see more Viking lore displayed. Then again, I don’t think they were going for Lawrence of Arabia with this. One other interesting observation, Freya is an anglicized version of the name Freyja, who was a major Norse goddess. Since the protagonist comes from the sky, I guess we know who’s gonna hook up!

Here’s that Dark Horse one-shot comic book I was talking about, from June 1998, with Vikings vs. an Alien of the Sigourney Weaver variety. Aliens: Stalker.
Apparently OUTLANDER will be released on DVD in the U.S. on May 19th.
