DVD Quick Take
Many people consider Platoon to be one of the best, if not the best Vietnam movie ever. I’m not willing to go that far, but I will say it’s a pretty darn good movie. Oliver Stone knows how to get his ideas and beliefs on film, and the actors who work with him obviously like him enough to turn in some great performances.
This is a war movie set in Vietnam, directed by Oliver Stone, so there’s really no point in trying to give a summary of the movie. There’s good guys, there’s bad guys, and they all seem to be on our side of the war. The enemy is there just to give our guys something to do it seems.
The DVD seems like it was just tossed together in order to get it on the shelves of your local video store. It’s quite bare-bones, with the only “extra” being a trailer for the movie. I know good and well the studio has material the would make for a great special edition, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see a re-release in the future. In the meantime the video quality is pretty good, and the audio is fine if not overpowering, so if you’re in the mood for this type of movie Platoon is certainly worth a spin.
Seen it? How many stars do you give it?
