Heavy Metal: Special Edition
Rated R
Runtime: 1hr 30min
Starring: Voices of John Candy, Harold Ramis, Eugene Levy

MFG Rating: 4/5

DVD Features

Video: Given that is animated, do not expect anything special from the video quality, but this is widescreen enhanced at least.

Audio: The Dolby Digital 5.1 track absolutely rocks. The music is loud and brilliant and it makes excellent use of the rear speakers when appropriate.

Extras: Tons of them on this DVD including deleted scenes, commentary, photo gallery, Heavy Metal magazine cover gallery, documentary and both pencil and cel portfolios.

DVD Quick Take

If you've never heard of this movie, chances are you aren't going to like it. If however you are one of the people who rocked out to this thing at a midnight movie back in the 80's, then this DVD is a must have as it is the absolute ultimate way to enjoy Heavy Metal.

The movie is actually a collection of short stories from the Heavy Metal magazine loosely bound together around the theme of this evil green glowing orb. Forget the plot, what this movie is really about is enjoying animated naked chicks and violence in a SciFi setting while rocking out to a heavy metal sound track. If that sounds cool to you, then you need this DVD.

This isn't Disney, put Junior to bed before you watch this. When I say violence and naked chicks, I'm not kidding around. We're talking full frontal nudity and lots of blood all set to the soothing sounds of bands like Black Sabbath.

If you don't have Dolby Digital 5.1 capability yet, this is one of those DVDs that if you hear it on someone's system that does, it'll make you start calculating the remaining limits on your credit card. It just flat out rocks. You also get a ton of extras including missing scenes and a ton of Heavy Metal art. My only complaint with the DVD is that for some goofy reason it defaults to Prologic instead of Dolby Digital 5.1, and the Prologic track isn't even in the same league as the Digital track.

Gun Play

Pretty darned violent even though animated.

Blood & Gore

Seems like someone gets impaled or otherwise turned into a bloody mess in every scene.

Car Chases

Not even spaceships can keep up with a New York cabbie.

T&A

Ok, so it's animated, but we get huge hooters and full frontal nudity repeatedly.

Chuckles

A couple of silly moments, but this isn't a laugh riot.
