The Iron Giant
Rated PG
Runtime: 1hr 26min
Staring: Harry Connick Jr., Eli Marienthal

MFG Rating: 4/5

DVD Features

Video: Widescreen enhanced and exceptionally well done. The colors just pop off the screen.

Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 though you won't know it most of the time. Voices are nice and clear though, so I have no complaints about the sound.

Extras: Making-of, music video and a trailer.

While this movie is obviously aimed at kids, I think it's worthy viewing for guys of all ages. After all, its Sci-fi and its animated, and who doesn't like to watch a cartoon!

The story starts off at sea, with a boat struggling to find the shore during a rowdy storm. Suddenly the sky brightens as an object hurdles into the ocean from the sky. Shortly afterwards, the captain thinks he spots the lighthouse, but it turns out to be a huge metal man!

Anyway, The Iron Giant got a little bump on his head during the fall and can't remember who he is or what he's supposed to do, all he knows is that he's hungry... and being made of metal, he obviously eats metal. During an evenings meal at a power station, a young boy named Hogarth finds him and makes enough of in impression to make sure the two become friends in short order.

The story is pretty straight forward. You've got a good-guy alien who is misunderstood and thus feared by the adults who want to shoot first and ask questions later. The ending isn't much of a surprise, but the story is so well told that you just won't care.
