DVD Quick Take

A relic is found in Egypt from several thousand years ago. After solving it’s puzzle it turns out to be a Stargate that can transport things to another world. The movie revolves around the exploration of that world and the origins of the device. Good SciFi movie with some interesting twists on human history, and this movie is the precursor to the TV series Stargate: SG1.

This is one of those movies where you just basically sit back and take it all in, and there’s alot on screen to enjoy. Good story with lots of action and a decent performance turned in by the cast, although Jaye Davidson is just freaky. He/she makes me think back to the movie “Stand By Me” where the kids are pondering what the Disney character “Goofy” really is. Is it a dog or a human or what? Well, that’s kinda the way I feel about Jaye Davidson’s gender.

The movie is excellent. The audio on the DVD is almost over the top. They really went nuts with the Dolby Digital 5.1 mastering with a ton of bass and lots of surround effects. There are some storms in this movie that will make your rear speakers and subwoofer sweat. However, it is very disappointing that this is the second release of this movie on DVD and a so-called special edition and they still didn’t offer a widescreen enhanced version. For that reason, I cant really call this one a “must have”. However, if you liked the movie and dont mind the lack of anamorphic widescreen, you wont be disappointed in this DVD.
