The Blue Planet

I admit it. I’m spoiled now. After watchnig Planet Earth in GLORIOUS HD on my big plasma TV, it’s hard to go back and watch ‘normal’ stuff. As I watched Blue Planet, I was amazed over and over again at the content and the surprising facts and the fantastic imagery. Did you know that the blue whale has blood vessels so huge that a human could swim through them?!? Wow!
But…the whole time I was watching these programs I found myself wishing that it had been in HD. The subject matter just SCREAMS out for it. But I had to keep reminding myself that this was filmed back in 2001 (or earlier) and filming in HD was just not a realistic consideration. They only had about $10 million or so in the budget which, while enormous for a documentary, is dwarfed by the $25 million recently spent on the Planet Earth series.
Eventually I was able to adjust to the picture quality (or lack thereof) and just enjoy the series. And it is most DEFINITELY some fantastic stuff! If you are a Discovery Channel / TLC whore like me, you’ll love every minute of this series so go out and buy it today!
The lack of a fifth star here is purely due to the lack of HD. If thats not a concern to you at all, then consider it a full 5-star title. If you DO have HD at home…make sure to get this before you get Planet Earth or you, too, will end up feeling spoiled like me.
Seen it? How many stars do you give it?
