The Mummy
December 11, 2004
Rated: PG-13 Runtime: 124 min Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
The Mummy is a darn good action/horror movie, but doesn’t quite pull everything off. For one thing Brendan Fraser is not Harrison Ford no matter how hard he tries. His wisecracks often fall flat and his apparent skills are no match for Indy. OK, so this is really the fault of the writers I guess, but in the next movie they need to give Brendan his own character instead of trying to make another Indy.
Brendan Fraser plays Rick O’Connell, a sometimes explorer who ends up in a jam and is about to be hung. Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) is a librarian who specializes in ancient Egypt and learns that Rick has knowledge of the lost City of the Dead. She bargains for his life in exchange for him taking her to the City.
Once there they discover that O’Connell had inadvertently wakened the 3000 year old mummy when he was last there, and now that he’s awake he wants out of his prison. Obviously he escapes or there wouldn’t be much of a movie, but this movie is quite predictable to anyone who has ever seen an action movie.
The effects are extremely well done and the acting is OK. I particularly like the scenes at the end, very very good CGI work.
Seen it? How many stars do you give it?
