DVD Quick Take

I had forgotten just how well this movie was done. The fact that Haley Joel Osmet didn’t win an Oscar for best supporting actor is amazing… he was ripped off.

DVD production values are very high with this disk but we have one major complaint. Disney home video has decided to start putting trailers at the beginning of their releases now and they disable the Menu and Stop buttons when they are playing. Fortunately they didn’t disable the Skip Forward button so you can click past the trailers easily, but I find the practice extremely distasteful.

The deleted scenes are worth the price of the disk all by themselves as they explain a lot of the tricks used in the movie. I can’t say more without giving anything away, so just take my word for it, you definitely want to watch the extras (after viewing the movie of course.)

Original Review of the Theatrical Release

Ok, who’s the wise guy? Someone at Universal thought it would be funny to sneak a chick flick in on us by disguising it as a horror movie.

This is most certainly not a horror movie. It’ll make you jump a few times, and it does have a very creepy morbid premise, but the gore is presented only as very quick glimpses, not even enough to make the weakest of stomachs feel compelled to unload it’s cookies. We were a little disappointed simply because the trailers and marketing lead us to expect something different from what we received.

We will let it pass as a mystery thriller as it is one of those movies that really draws you in and makes you want to see all of the pieces unfold to see what’s going on and how it’ll turn out. And in fact although we didn’t get what we walked in expecting, what we did get turns out to be a very well done movie. The acting, particularly by Haley Joel Osmet who plays the young boy who is the center of the story is exceptional.

The story centers around a child psychologist bent on helping a young boy who is extremely disturbed because he can “see dead people”. As this is a mystery thriller, I wont tell you much more than that about the story, nor should you talk to your friends about this one until after you’ve all seen it. Because this one has one of the best surprise endings of anything I’ve seen in a long time. I see alot of movies and rarely does a surprise ending actually catch me by surprise. This one did. I’ll say no more about it.

Overall, the movie isn’t what we expected, but it turns out to be a darned good flick. But then how often do we see a Bruce Willis movie that we totally hate? And Bruce keeps his streak alive. As is tradition Bruce must get shot, maimed, stabbed or otherwise punked at some point during any movie he’s in. So, in short go see it, and even if she’s squeamish, don’t be afraid to take a date.

Seen it? How many stars do you give it?
