What Planet Are You From

Garry Shandling needs to stick to the 30 minute sitcom format. This would have been pretty funny edited down to a half-hour special on HBO, but as a full-length movie it just sucked.

It’s not that the movie isn’t based on a pretty amusing premise, it just doesn’t execute very well at all. For example, when Garry’s character gets excited his penis “hums”, but while the sound of an apparent vibrator in his pants is amusing the first and second time it happens, the other 30 or 40 attempts at this joke just ruin the whole thing.

How a cast this good can suck so bad I’m not sure, but nobody turned in a really decent performance. I think they should all fire their agents for getting them into a film like this.

Oh yeah, the plot. Garry plays Harold, an alien on a planet inhabited only by males. In order to extend their reach in the Galaxy Harold is sent to Earth with the goal of impregnating an Earth woman so they can “conquer from within.” The funniest part of the movie is when he’s being trained for his assignment as some of the methods they tell him to use to get into a woman’s pants rung quite true. Past that it’s time to go home.

Did I mention the movie sucked?
